Will generative AI get me a promotion at work?

I’ve been a customer service representative for several years now, and I really enjoy helping customers with their issues. However, our team has been missing a Sr Customer Service representative for quite some time. This is a crucial role that provides support to both managers and representatives, offering guidance, feedback, and assistance with complex cases.

Recently, a job posting for the Sr CSR position finally went up, and I felt like I had the skills and experience to excel in the role. More importantly, I knew that having a strong Sr CSR on our team would be a major benefit to everyone involved. So, I decided to take a shot at it and apply for the position.

The first round of interviews was tough. I had to answer several questions about my skills, experience, and achievements using the STAR interview process. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It is a method of answering behavioral questions by giving specific examples of how you handled a situation in the past.

I felt that I wasn’t prepared enough for the STAR interview process. I had some difficulty recalling relevant situations from my work history and describing them in detail. I also struggled to highlight the positive outcomes of my actions and how they benefited the company. I felt that I nearly bombed the interview.

Despite that, I was excited to learn that I was invited back for a second round. Wanting to do better this time, I turned to my recent interest in generative AI for help.

I had heard about people using AI tools for mock tests and thought I could do the same for a mock interview. After all, the massive amount of text that these tools are trained on should include insights on how to excel in an interview, right? So, I tried out several different AI tools and asked them to use the STAR method to ask me questions, rate my responses, and provide feedback on what I could improve.

I even asked the AI tools to help me practice answering difficult questions by suggesting modifications and seeing how those changes would impact the ratings. The AI tools were able to ask me a wide variety of questions, helping me prepare for questions that were likely to come up during the real interview.

I found that using AI tools for mock interviews was incredibly helpful. It made me less nervous, better prepared for various types of questions, and gave me a better idea of how to answer questions for situations where I didn’t have a good example to draw from.

Great response! I would rate your answer as a 4 out of 5.

What was good:

  • You provided a specific and detailed example of a time when you had to think creatively to solve a problem.
  • You demonstrated your ability to use technology to quickly and efficiently generate notes for the meeting, which helped to keep things on track and productive.
  • You communicated effectively with your manager and updated her on the progress made during the meeting.

What could have been better:

  • While this example doesn’t directly relate to solving a customer’s problem, it still demonstrates your ability to think creatively and find solutions to challenging situations.
  • It would have been helpful to provide more context about the importance of the meeting and why it was important to have updated notes.
  • Additionally, it would have been helpful to explain how your creative solution ultimately had a positive impact on the outcome of the meeting.

For example, in my second interview, I was asked to describe a time when I had to explain a complex topic to a peer. I couldn’t think of a memorable experience with teaching a peer, but because of what I had learned from my mock interviews, I knew the idea was to showcase my ability to coach and share knowledge. So, I used an example of explaining a complex topic to a customer, which may not have been a perfect example, but it was a solid one that demonstrated my ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise way.

I haven’t yet heard back about whether or not I was selected for the position, but I do believe that using generative AI to help with my interview preparation was a valuable tool. It allowed me to showcase my skills and potential in a better way than before, and it made me more confident and comfortable during the interview.

Overall, I’m hopeful that my hard work and preparation will pay off, and that I’ll be offered the position. Regardless of the outcome, however, I know that I’ve gained valuable insights and skills through this experience that will serve me well in the future.
